On 21 June 2023, DAERA launched a public consultation lasting 16 weeks closing on 11 October.The consultation sought the views of the public on whether the NI Executive should follow the UK Climate Change Committee (CCC) recommendations, set out in their advice report ‘The Path to a net zero Northern Ireland’ published in March 2023, specifically in relation to:(i) The proposed 2030 and 2040 emissions reduction targets to continue the trajectory required to meet net zero by 2050.(ii) The first three 5-yearly carbon budgets covering periods 2023-2027, 2028-2032 and 2033-2037.(iii) Optional
Consultation
The consultation received 235 written responses. A total of 21 sectoral workshops and stakeholder engagement events including public sessions took place as part of the consultation. Over 700 people attended these events.
