Protocol for ex-situ conservation and reintroduction of the freshwater pearl mussel Margaritifera margaritifera in Northern Ireland
Date published:
Ex-situ conservation involving captive breeding for the reintroduction of species facing global, regional or local extinction is a measure of last resort. Until water quality in impacted river catchments is restored to a level that will support self-sustaining populations it is likely that Margaritifera margaritifera will become extinct in Northern Ireland.
