In addition the invertebrate community is important for its overall diversity and includes species which have restricted distribution within the United Kingdom.
The lough itself is mesotrophic (lakes which are commonly clear water with beds of submerged aquatic plants and medium levels of nutrients) and contains a range of aquatic palnts including white water lily and others such as perfoliate pondweed, various - leaved pondweed and long - stalked pondweed in submerged beds with broad - leaved pondweed and unbranched bur - reeds forming floating rafts on the surface.
